Setting aside traditional forms of discourse, Rapid Pulse 2016 has instead decided to provide an atmosphere where exchange of ideas happens naturally and conversations flow freely – as they tend to do over food and drink, at table. Mothergirl is a performance duo living and working in Chicago, IL. Our work has taken the form of installation, durational event, and guided audience interaction. The work frequently uses humor to deconstruct and render absurd various tacitly held ideals that we (Katy and Sophia) encounter in our own lives. These performances relate to consumerist impulses, feminist and feminine tropes, and/or to the dynamics of a mutually caring relationship.
JGV/WAR is the collaboration between J. Gibran Villalobos and William A. Ruggiero. Their practice includes writing, curating, research, and project development with a focus on socially engaged practice, and contemporary Latin American art. Villalobos and Ruggiero both are art historians and administrators whose research and projects position programming and civic engagement at the center of their practice. Through the use of “shadow curating,” they antagonize each other to create projects that have undergone a conceptual and pragmatic galvanization. JGV/WAR photo Nick Tuinstra
As a cross-media artist, researcher, curator and writer, wen yau has been concentrating on performance/live art, time-based media and social practices in the recent years. Her works often grapple with cultural difference and intimacy in public space. Her work has been widely shown in Asia Pacific, Europe, North and South Americas. She has been working as Researcher at the Asia Art Archive and contributes to various publications in Hong Kong and Asia. She is also the co-founder of Woofer Ten, a local artspace based in Hong Kong advocating social practices. Currently she is doing her PhD at the Academy of Visual Arts at the Hong Kong Baptist University researching performative practices in postcolonial Hong Kong art and activism, and has been serving as Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Northwestern University, USA in 2015-2016.
KATHERINE C DOYLE
Born and raised in a town north of Columbus, Ohio, Katie has been living and working in Chicago since 2008. After receiving her BA in Ceramics from Loyola University Chicago in 2012, she pursued a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Ceramics from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 2014. In May 2016, she received a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute. Katie’s practice explores the parallels between porcelain and femininity through the lens of heritage, anxiety, and humor. Her most recent work deals exclusively with the body, gender, and identity as they relate to those themes. Katie’s work has been included in exhibitions at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Chicago’s Woman Made Gallery, CLUTCH Gallery, the Claypool-Young Arts Center at Morehead State, the Peggy McConnell Arts Center of Worthington, Gallery UNO Chicago, and the Ralph Arnold Fine Arts Annex at Loyola University Chicago.
